While stumbling through the Latest Things the other day I happened upon a post referring to an announcement that people who want to hack on the Dreamwidth code base are well taken care of -- hosted dev instances, and so forth. IIRC, DreamWidth is a mostly-Perl system, and I'm a mostly-Perl kind of guy. Depending on my stock of tuits, I may throw my hat into the ring this weekend and get set up.

Dog-sitting for the in-laws is the order of the next couple of weeks. The dog is a cockapoo, heavy on the poodle. He's also pretty high-energy. Combine that with my dog (who's a Boston terrier x American cocker spaniel), and you've got a pretty energetic few hours of play on your hands. We're hoping they tire themselves out quickly and get on with flopping over on the couch.

Had my second (and apparently last) endocrinology appointment for the year today. hg A1C is heading in the right direction, *DL is right where it should be, K is a bit high (no doubt due to over-consumption of Diet Pepsi -- got to find some sucralose-sweetened cola with a heap of caffeine), but it won't kill me. It's just an outlying number that the endocrinologist couldn't explain until I pointed the source out to him. I've managed to drop my insulin doses by 30-50% and bring the numbers to a much more consistent state than they were before.

A lot of this is no doubt due to cutting out the gluten. Before it seemed that there was a hidden factor that affected me on a day-by-day, and often meal-by-meal basis -- it just seemed that consistent dosing brought inconsistent results. Looking back it seems likely that was a reaction to the gluten causing my digestion to do dodgy things. I feel a heck of a lot better now that I'm off the stuff, anyway.

Resisting the urge to start re-reading Avalon again. I read the first half of it in one go some years ago and the last half as it was posted. I was actually quite bummed out when Josh laid down the pen on that one, and the notes on the conclusion only intensified that. I'd love to see the next three years of Avalon following Ceilidh and Phoebe in one arc and Joe in another. Makes me wish I could draw and write!

Terminology question from someone who honestly doesn't know -- would riffing on that be fanfic, slash, or other? (I know it would help if I even looked up those terms first -- consider this question a personal to-do for me.)

Update: To-do to-done. The Ceilidh and Phoebe story arc would indeed be fanfic and (fem)slash, and the Joe story arc would be fanfic but not slash unless he got it on with Alan. Gotcha.

Well, I'm as Google-free as I'm going to get. Only my generic GMail account is left. Everything else is closed. Google support finally saw the light and manually expired my account, putting it in a state where I could (and did) delete it altogether. Beats the heck out of waiting until the end of March 2012.

One more thing off the to-do list. \o/

I've been trying to do more coding on the weekends, and I now think this is a mistake. Weekends need to be for resting and just doing whatever, not for trying to cram in whatever I don't get time to do during the week. I nuked the Yabba repo -- nothing of value there, and it'll never get used now that I'm on DW.

The doglet got fed wheat crackers a couple of days ago and now she has a patch of irritated skin on her tummy. This makes three times in the last several months she's gotten her paws on something with gluten and three times her body's reacted in exactly the same way. At least we know for sure what's causing it now.

Went to Sushi Katsu (or is it Katsu Sushi? It's not a name that makes much sense, anyway) for dinner tonight. It's the only sushi place I've found that keeps gluten-free soy sauce on hand, so they get a great big gold star. The food was good, as usual, and the place was hoppin' busy. Given that I eat sushi five days per week at work you'd think I'd be bored of it come the weekend, but fortunately that's not the case.

No bites on the positive-attitude-LGBTQ queries here or on Twitter. Not surprising, I guess. So many communities are so slanted towards the LG end of things so it'd be interesting to find one that leaned toward the BTQ end.

There's a lot to like about DreamWidth, and it's not all in the implementation.

Just watch Latest Things for a while and you'll see some pretty sweet photography coming from Russia and the surrounding area. Looking at the landscape shots it seems like Russia and BC have a lot in common. I haven't used TinEye on the photos or tried to translate any of the text yet, but I'm working with the assumption that the photos are original, and not just copied conversation pieces for the text.

I'm also a fan of the Guiding Principles and Diversity Statement. It's nice to have those written down and posted for all to see. Good work, folks.

Are there any positive (in attitude) LGBTQ communities online any more? I've been looking around but not having a lot of luck so far. Things seem to be either pretty quiet or so focused on the negative issues that it's hard to take on a regular basis. In this age of It Gets Better, I'd imagined that positivity might be easier to come by. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've decided that it's not worth continuing to use Google+ as a social network. Besides, Google is really getting on my bad side as of late, as are several other companies who are trying to squeeze marketable data out of people. Rather than complain too much or tilt at windmills, I've decided to start supporting the good folks.

I switched my main e-mail, calendar, etc. from Google to Zoho after not being able to find any webmail+calendar+tasks+wiki+addressbook packages that I really liked that would run well on my own servers. Rather than using Google+ for social outreach I'm going to give DreamWidth a try. In both cases I'll be going to paid accounts, and in both cases the dollar values each month are very reasonable -- in the range of a latté or two. I don't drink coffee, so I'll hardly notice. :)
